Claude Code Changed Everything — Here's What Actually Happened

In February 2025 Anthropic shipped Claude Code. It was not a product launch. It was an economic event.

By February 2026 the SaaS market had lost US$2 trillion in value. 104,000 tech jobs vanished. Block, Jack Dorsey's company, cut 40% of its workforce and attributed the decision directly to AI gains. Atlassian dropped 35%. The market stopped betting on interface providers and started betting on intelligence providers.

This was not gradual. It was a shock.

What Actually Happened

The logic is simple once you see it. If an agent can interact directly with databases and APIs, the traditional software layer becomes unnecessary overhead. You do not need Jira if an agent can manage your project. You do not need Confluence if an agent can answer questions about your codebase. You do not need a human to type the code when an agent can read the spec and ship it.

The first casualties were the companies that sold interfaces rather than intelligence. The second casualties were the jobs that existed primarily to operate those interfaces.

In February 2026 Anthropic shipped Claude Code Security, an agent capable of finding and fixing complex vulnerabilities autonomously. A model called Claude Mythos leaked shortly after. The cybersecurity industry entered panic mode. Palo Alto Networks dropped 12%. CrowdStrike 11%. Zscaler 8.8%. The cost of finding a critical vulnerability collapsed overnight. Traditional defenses could be overwhelmed.

The Wall Street Journal sent two reporters with zero coding experience to build and publish a project using natural language. No engineers, no designers. They shipped. That is vibe coding and it is not the future. It is now.

What This Looks Like in Practice

I run two online businesses. Two years ago I knew HTML and CSS. Not enough to build anything real. I had ideas, which is the easy part, and zero engineering bandwidth, which is the part that kills dreams.

I started with ChatGPT in 2023. Copy-paste-prompts, debugging by repetition, no memory between sessions. Slow and exhausting but it worked. I was managing a chatbot, not building software.

Then I got tools. Memory, file access, agents that could read a whole project and understand context. The difference was not incremental. I went from shipping one landing page in a week to shipping a full dashboard with auth and database in three hours. Not because I got better as a developer. Because I finally had a tool that could actually direct.

The code was not written by me. The decisions were.

The Redistribution Problem

92 million jobs at risk. 300 million workers exposed to automation. 40% of global jobs touched by AI, rising to 60% in advanced economies. The CEO of Anthropic said half of entry-level admin positions could disappear.

The gains are not distributed. The people building with agents are getting leverage. Everyone else is getting a LinkedIn notification.

This is not a technical problem. This is a distribution problem. The technology is not the question. The question is who captures the value.

What Actually Changes

The old model is collapsing. License-per-user. Seat-based pricing. Interface-first software. All of it built on the assumption that humans are the medium between intent and execution.

That assumption is breaking.

What replaces it is intelligence as a service. Not AI as a feature. AI as the layer that sits between what you want and what exists.

If you are a non-technical founder: you have more leverage now than any employee in history. Learn to direct. You do not need to code. You need to decide what to build.

If you are a developer: your value is not in typing code. It is in judgment, taste, and knowing what to build. The agents handle execution.

If you are neither: the water is warm. Figure out what you bring that is not routine.

The tools exist. The leverage is real. The question is not whether this changes everything. It already has. The question is what you do with that.
